On September 29, the Center for International Medical Education (CiME) held a successful online academic lecture on New Concepts and Approaches in Medical Education. The lecture featured WU Hongbin, Associate Researcher and Doctoral Supervisor of the Institute of Medical Education at Peking University. The event was attended by more than 370 teachers and education administrators and was presided over by Chen Weiying, Vice Dean of ZJU-ISM and Executive Director of the CiME.

Dr. Chen provided an introduction to ZJU-ISM and highlighted the organizations and main functions of CiME during the lecture. She emphasized that the role of the Center is to promote systematic teaching reform in medical education and to foster innovation at ZJU-ISM.

During the lecture, Wu Hongbin presented a new concept of medical education, analyzing its characteristics from six perspectives: service, theory, practice, judgment, reflection, and association. He then focused on the seven elements of medical education - curriculum, context, strategy, theme, teachers, learners, and institutions - and integrated new ideas and methods into these elements. Additionally, he introduced the current developments in medical education both domestically and internationally, offering implications for educators.

Prof. Guo Yongsong, Deputy Director of the Medical Education Research Center of Zhejiang University School of Medicine and Executive Deputy Editor of China Higher Medical Education, gave insightful comments on the lecture. He emphasized that the reform of medical education should be guided by academic theories and supported by in-depth academic research. He also stressed the importance of critical thinking while evaluating the reform process.

The lecture was inspiring and offered innovative ideas, thorough analysis, and a combination of theories and practices. It provided a useful reference for teachers seeking to update their teaching philosophies and enrich their teaching methods. Prof. Wang Yifang of Peking University commented, “Both experts shared fascinating insights into medical education and research, and I benefited greatly from the lecture”.
