Delving into the Realm of Clinical Teaching Evaluation
The Center for International Medical Education (CiME) recently organized a highly successful thematic lecture on medical education, focusing on the crucial topic of evaluating clinical teaching. Held on May 29th, the event featured expert Prof. Guo Yongsong as the guest speaker. Prof. Guo, an esteemed expert in assessment and accreditation of clinical medicine from the Ministry of Education, Deputy Director of the Medical Education Research Center at Zhejiang University School of Medicine, and Executive Deputy Editor of China Higher Medical Education, provided invaluable insights and guidance to enhance the development of clinical teaching professionals. The event was moderated by Dr. Chen Weiying, Vice Dean of ZJU-ISM and Executive Director of CiME.
Vice Dean Chen delivered an enthusiastic opening address, expressing sincere gratitude to Prof. Guo Yongsong for his valuable guidance to our school and providing a concise overview of CiME’s vital role, and the progress made by the center. Emphasizing the profound importance of delivery of high-quality clinical teaching in the context of developing medical talent, Vice Dean Chen introduced “CLINIC-based” teaching to these efforts to cultivate talent, which encompasses Competency-based training, Longitudinal mentorship, Interdisciplinary curriculum, New professionalism, Individual development, and Cultural immersion, all aimed at nurturing well-rounded medical professionals.
Prof. Guo’s lecture delivered comprehensive and clear guidance on implementing effective assessment practices in clinical teaching. He stressed the importance of considering various factors, including teaching objectives and students’ backgrounds, and underscored the need for diverse evaluation methods and appropriate assessment formats. The lecture emphasized key areas in assessment such as students’ comprehension of course content, mastery of self-directed learning, as well as clinical proficiency and patient care skills.

During the lecture, Prof. Guo outlined commonly employed clinical evaluation methods, such as Standardized Patient (SP, SSP, TSP), OSCE, SOAP cases, DOPS, Mini-CEX, and Entrustable Professional Activity (EPA). He gave a clear definition for each method, discussed pros and cons, elucidated implementation steps, and shared evaluation criteria. Notably, Prof. Guo recommended the application of EPA methods tailored to students’ competencies based on their specialization, role, and years of hospital experience. This personalized approach enables comprehensive acquisition of essential professional knowledge and practical skills necessary for successful clinical practice.
