Advancing Scholarship in Teaching and Learning: A Successful Lecture held on “Conducting Medical Education Research”

On June 15th, the Center for International Medical Education (CiME) invited Wu Hongbin, Associate Researcher of the Institute of Medical Education at Peking University to deliver a presentation on “Conducting Medical Education Research”. The lecture drew nearly 400 individuals online and offline from well-known domestic institutions such as Peking Union Medical College and West China School of Medicine, Sichuan University. Chen Weiying, Vice Dean of ZJU-ISM and Executive Director of the CiME presided over the event.

The lecture commenced with an impassioned opening remark by Dr. Chen. She provided an overview of the International Medical Center - the Fourth Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (ZJU4H), International School of Medicine, Zhejiang University (ZJU-ISM), and the International Institutes of Medicine, Zhejiang University (ZJU-IIM). Dr. Chen emphasized that a series of lectures would be launched this year to help clinician educators to improve teaching and scholarship in medical education.

Dr. Wu engaged the participants in exploring the challenges and obstacles faced by educators when conducting medical education research. Drawing specific examples from the school, Dr. Wu elucidated the art of proposal writing for educational projects and advised teachers to gain a comprehensive understanding of various research paradigms before starting their studies. Moreover, Dr. Wu generously shared his wealth of experience in the field of medical education research, elaborating on 12 key points to consider when undertaking such research. The key include cultivating research thinking that encompasses both teaching reform practices and academic inquiry, broadening academic horizons through active participation in academic conferences, and focusing on the social background and practical significance within the Chinese context while selecting research topics. Dr. Wu also stressed the significance of thorough literature reviews and a robust theoretical framework.

During the Q & A session, the audience actively expressed their ideas and raised their puzzles. Xu Xiaoming, the research fellow and secretary of CiME, expressed her appreciation for the insights gained during the lecture, “I have learnt that Health Professions Education(HPE) could work as a pathway to ensure the clinical education quality. Moreover, Dr. Wu introduced us to the methodology of doing HPE research, which could benefit the clinician educators by strengthening their research abilities, and gaining scholarly outputs for their career development.”
