On July 13th, a delegation from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS YLL), paid a visit to the International School of Medicine, Zhejiang University (ZJU-ISM) and the Fourth Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (ZJU4H). The visit, led by YLL Vice Dean Lau Tang Ching, marked a significant follow-up to ISM Vice Dean Chen Weiying’s delegation’s visit to NUS in February. Chairman Xu Jian, Vice Dean Chen Weiying, and Assistant Dean Sun Wen attended the meeting.

Vice Dean Chen Weiying provided an overview of the International School of Medicine. In particular, she shared the “CLINIC-based” teaching approach to cultivate talent, including Competency-based training, Longitudinal mentorship, Interdisciplinary curriculum, New professionalism, Individual development, and Cultural immersion, aiming to nurture well-rounded medical professionals. Chen also shared insights into the medical education, sparking mutual interest in potential collaborations in curriculum upgrading, joint programs, electives and workshops, and SoTL collaboration.

Vice Dean Lau Tang Ching of NUS YLL emphasized the institution’s commitment to the collaborative development of medicine, education, and research. He highlighted three significant aspects for curriculum reform at the YLL. Firstly, the school strives to align with the Ministry of Health (MOH)’s work towards a healthier Singapore. Secondly, it aims to fulfill the MOH’s six national standards to cultivate the medical professionals. Thirdly, it has implemented the new NUS interdisciplinary healthcare curriculum to provide diverse pathways and courses for students, offering various activities and courses as well as overseas exchange internships and research opportunities to support their personal and professional development.

The fruitful discussions and exchanges between the two parties covered various topics. Zhu Lin, the deputy director from the Office of Teaching and Student Affairs, introduced the history and the highlights of the MBBS program, and the ongoing faculty training program. Lee Shuh Shing, Assistant Director of the Centre for Medical Education (CenMED) at the YLL, gave an overview of the CenMED, including offering training in curriculum development, professional assessment, teaching methods and assessment, medical education research, etc. During the discussions, both parties further strengthened their cooperation in areas such as faculty training, student exchange programs, and clinical skills training. And in the coming November, a faculty training program would be launched in Yiwu.

The visit concluded with a renewed sense of collaboration and shared goals. The delegations from NUS YLL and ZJU-ISM expressed their eagerness to explore further cooperation opportunities, which will undoubtedly contribute to the advancement of medical education in ZJU-ISM and the development of highly skilled healthcare professionals.
