Simulation-based Curriculum Development Boot Camp
2023.11.13, Prof. Lars Konge from Copenhagen University has been invited by the Director of the Scientific Research and Teaching Department Zhang Yongming of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, the Fourth Affiliated Hospital coming to our campus and provide the clinicians, researchers, and administration staff with a Simulation-based Curriculum Development Boot Camp. Dr. Chen Weiying, the Vice Dean for International Affairs of the International School of Medicine, Zhejiang University (ZJU-ISM), attended this Boot Camp and gave an opening speech for this activity. Dean Chen emphasized the importance of international collaborations and medical education research at the ZJU-ISM.

During this workshop, Prof. Lars introduced the audience to Kern's six-step approach to curriculum development and illustrated how to optimally use simulation-based training to acquire and ensure technical skills according to the best available evidence. The audience was guided through each stage, from problem identification and needs assessment to implementation, evaluation, and feedback. This systematic approach serves as a roadmap for educators to craft effective and evidence-based curricula, ensuring a holistic and learner-centric educational experience. The audience tried to design a simulation-based training course based on their own specialty.

Looking ahead, as we reflect on Prof. Lars' enlightening session, the integration of Kern's six-step approach and simulation-based training emerges as a transformative paradigm in curriculum development. This forward-looking approach not only equips learners with technical proficiency but also instills a deep understanding of the evidence supporting their educational journey. “Lars' workshop triggered our enthusiasms towards teaching. Many teaching methods and theory must be put into practice to evaluate their effectiveness. Even the negative results are also really inspiring.” said one of the attendees, Doctor Li Miaomiao.

In conclusion, Professor Lars has set a new standard in medical education by showcasing a curriculum development approach that seamlessly integrates evidence-based principles with the power of simulation. The ripple effect of this innovative methodology is poised to shape the future of technical skill acquisition in medical training programs worldwide. This event inspired the clinicians, educational researchers, and administration staff to work closely together in the future to move medical education forward based on research evidence.
