A Summer of Internationalization at Home and Abroad

The International School of Medicine at Zhejiang University (ZJU-ISM) has once again demonstrated its commitment to global medical education through the Bilateral Overseas Elective Program. This summer, the program facilitated an enriching exchange of knowledge and culture, bringing together medical students from diverse backgrounds and institutions.

ZJU-ISM welcomed students from the University of Glasgow and Chulalongkorn University, providing them with the opportunity to engage in a variety of clinical and academic practices.

Zhengying He, an elective student from the University of Glasgow, reflected on her experience, saying, "I have been involved in many clinical settings at the hospital, including outpatient clinics, ward rounds, MDTs, and even the emergency department, which greatly expanded and deepened my understanding of medical fields."

Similarly, Chitsanupong Prakhongjai from Chulalongkorn University highlighted the teaching quality at ZJU-ISM: "The professors were so passionate about their subjects of expertise and eager to share their knowledge, which deeply motivated me."

As part of the program, ZJU-ISM students were given the chance to study abroad at prestigious partner institutions.

Deeyana Hamheem, a ZJU-ISM MBBS student who recently completed her elective at the University of Western Australia, shared, "The study at UWA exposed me to cutting-edge medical research, advanced clinical practices, and ethical considerations, all of which are crucial to becoming a competent and compassionate doctor."

Another ZJU-ISM MBBS student, Kolawatch Loakhajorn who did his elective at Chulalongkorn University, emphasized the value of cultural exchange: "The cultural exchange event with students from various nations, as well as other interactions, have allowed me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds, broadening my perspective and enriching my experience."

The testimonies from these students underscore the program’s success in providing a "colorful and fruitful summer." Professor Chen Weiying, Dean for Education, International Affairs, Student & Admissions at ZJU-ISM said, "Our Bilateral Overseas Elective Program, in collaboration with reputable global institutions, is designed to enrich the training of future healthcare professionals by providing international exposure to clinical practice, academic learning, and cultural diversity. Through this program, we hope students will not only develop essential skills but also gain fresh ideas and forge lasting friendships. These experiences will ultimately help students become globally-minded physicians. I am confident that the shared efforts and vision with our partners will contribute to medical education worldwide."

This summer's bilateral exchanges have not only expanded the academic and clinical horizons of the participating students but have also strengthened the international bonds that are essential for the advancement of global medical education.
