White Coat Ceremony Welcomes New Medical Students
With bright white coats and Zhejiang University Badge, ninety-eight Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students commence their education to become a doctor.

On September 5, International School of Medicine, Zhejiang University(ZJU-ISM) welcomed its second cohort of international students from 25 countries in its flagship undergraduate medicine program. Since the campus opened its door in 2023, it has now about 200 students from 43 countries altogether.
Dean Huang Hefeng opened the ceremony, welcoming the new students to ZJU-ISM and to their medical journey. She encouraged the students to pursue their studies with zeal and commitment.
Huang emphasized, "While you study in China, always think globally, embracing a love for a wider community." She advised the students to excel in their studies with the aim of serving their homelands and enhancing the health and well-being of humanity in the future. Her wordsresonated with the new students, setting a tone of global responsibility and academic excellence for their journey at ZJU-ISM.

"We're thrilled to welcome these 98 new students to our school and community," said Dr. Chen Weiying, vice dean for International Affairs and Admissions. "We look forward to celebrating the diversity of our students and together advancing our mission of excellence in education, research and care delivery, and creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels heard and supported."

The opening ceremony concluded with a keynote address by Professor Guan Minxin, Chairman of the Academic Committee. He shared invaluable insights with the students on the path to becoming a leading doctor, drawing from his own personal experiences. Students were inspired by his groundbreaking contributions to the study of mitochondrial diseases, particularly in understanding the genetic causes of hearing loss and other related conditions.

"That is great! I have been looking forward to becoming a doctor for a long time. Wearing a white coat, I feel like I have truly become a member of this community." Ksenia Barber from Russia expressed her excitement about being a new ZJUer.
Bilal Hersi from the United Kingdom spoke on behalf of the class. "Medicine is often seen as a profession that earns significant respect and recognition. I chose to study in China because it is at the forefront of technology and medical research."

The event was followed by a Hippocratic Oath recitation, and students received gift bags from their seniors. Many posed for photos afterward with their newly-donned white coats.
