Academics Ignite the Passion of High Schoolers in Science and Medicine

In the quest for new knowledge and discovery, the influence of role models is boundless. Recently, medical experts from International School of Medicine, Zhejiang University (ZJU-ISM) visited Wenyuan Middle School, which is part of the Hangzhou Xuejun Middle School Education Group, and Hangzhou No.14 Middle School. They delivered an inspirational lecture titled "Endowing Dreams with Wings," aimed at sparking the passion of China's next generation for medicine and science.

On the afternoon of December 8th, at Wenyuan Middle School Auditorium, Academician Professor Huang Hefeng, Dean of ZJU-ISM, delivered a lecture titled "Growth Insights and Sharing" to first-year high schoolers. In her lecture, she delved into three main topics: the spirit and cultural heritage of Zhejiang University, her personal growth experiences, and medical inheritance and innovation. Additionally, she also shared her work experience in obstetrics and gynecology, as well as her pioneering scientific, technological, and theoretical research in reproductive medicine, highlighting the significant role of medical advancements in enhancing human health and well-being.

In November, at Hangzhou No.14 Middle School, Professors Guan Minxin and Ma Jun, both doctoral supervisors at ZJU-ISM, participated in the "Scientists on campus" series of events. Guan delivered a speech titled "What Constitutes a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine" and shared the laureates, research directions, and contributions of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine over the past 20 years. He emphasized that the foundation of scientific research begins with minor inquiries. In a similar vein, Ma employed vivid and humorous language to transform abstract and challenging concepts into comprehensible anecdotes, aiding students in grasping scientific issues. He also shared his personal learning journey and his experience.

These activities not only brought students into close contact with cutting-edge knowledge in medicine and science. More importantly, they sparked their love for science and inspired reflections on their future careers. Academician Professor Huang concluded by encouraging the students to broaden their knowledge, encompassing philosophy, psychology, sociology, ethics, aesthetics, and more importantly, to develop themselves holistically and contribute to the progress of the country and the advancement of humanity.

Through these activities, ZJU-ISM has showcased its educational philosophy of cultivating innovative talents with scientific literacy. "Perhaps one sentence from me could potentially change someone's life," Guan said.

The insights shared by these medical experts have undoubtedly given wings to students' scientific dreams and provided valuable inspiration and motivation for their future career.
