Dr. Hussain Al-dahwi, ICRC Regional Health Adviser for East Asia, Visits International School of Medicine, Zhejiang University

On December 8, Dr. Hussain Al-dahwi of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) visited International School of Medicine, Zhejiang University (ZJU-ISM), where he met with Professor Lou Min, Executive Dean of ISM, and delivered a lecture to MBBS students.

Dr. Al-dahwi holds an M.D., a Master of Public Health, and an M.B.A. He currently serves as the ICRC’s Regional Health Adviser for China, the Korean Peninsula, and Mongolia, concurrently holding the position of Global Health Adviser for Large-Scale Crisis Preparedness and Response at ICRC headquarters. Dr. Al-dahwi is a distinguished expert in health and humanitarian diplomacy, uniquely combining clinical background, policy insight, and global strategic capacity. He has accumulated over two decades of decision-making and managerial experience in both governmental and international organizational systems. He has led global and multinational medical teams and contributed extensively to advancing international cooperation frameworks and global health agendas.

Drawing on his personal and professional journey, Dr. Al-dahwi delivered a lecture titled “From Clinic to Global Health,” in which he systematically articulated the interconnections and distinctions among clinical medicine, public health, and global health. He also elaborated on the ICRC’s role in fostering global health partnerships.

The subsequent Q&A session was marked by lively engagement. Students raised questions ranging from individual career development to the operational dynamics of international organizations, all of which Dr. Al-dahwi addressed with thoughtful responses. He encouraged MBBS students not only to master clinical knowledge and skills, but also to cultivate a global vision and a commitment to human well-being; to develop communication, organizational, and leadership capabilities; and to strive toward becoming future global health leaders capable of promoting health and serving humanity on a broader scale.

Following the lecture, Dr. Al-dahwi toured the ZJU-ISM campus and held a meeting with Professor Lou Min. Professor Lou provided an overview of ISM’s development and its strategic plans for the next phase. Dr. Al-dahwi extended his congratulations on ISM’s achievements. The two sides engaged in in-depth discussions on topics including the cultivation of global health leaders and the advancement of multi-tiered international exchange and cooperation. Initial consensus was reached regarding prospective collaboration.
