Vice President Li Xiaoming led a delegation to Mauritius and Tanzania

From November 22 to 28, Li Xiaoming, Vice President of Zhejiang University, led a delegation to Mauritius and Tanzania for a series of activities focused on international student recruitment, medical education cooperation, and healthcare collaboration. He was accompanied by Chen Guangdi, Executive Dean ofThe D. H. Chen School of Universal Health; Wang Yufen, Executive Vice Dean of the International College,Zhejiang University; and Lou Xiaoxiao, Vice Dean of the International School of Medicine, Zhejiang University.


On November 23, Li Xiaoming attended the Mauritius Education Fair, showcasing Zhejiang University’s MBBS program—its training system, academic strengths, and career prospects—to over 100 attendees. He also met with local MBBS alumni. Over the past two decades, the program has trained more than 100 medical professionals for Mauritius, many of whom now serve as key members of the country’s healthcare system.

On November 24, the delegation visited the Chinese Embassy in Mauritius, where they met with Chargé d'Affaires Ding Peiyi to discuss bilateral ties, the local healthcare system, and medical education cooperation. They also held talks with Mauritius's Minister of Education, Kaviraj Sharma Sukon, reaching preliminary agreements on joint programs, collaborative research, and talent development. In a meeting with Dr. K. Deepchand, chair of the Mauritius Medical Council, initial consensus was reached on short-term physician training. The delegation further toured C Care Hospital and spoke with CEO Rudi Clarke on areas including robotic surgery training, complex case collaboration, telemedicine, and student and physician exchanges.

On November 26 and 27, the delegation visited Tanzania, starting at the Chinese Embassy in Dar es Salaam, where they met with Ambassador Chen Mingjian.

The delegation also visited Muhimbili Orthopedic Institute, Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, Aga Khan Hospital, and the University of Dar es Salaam, discussing local healthcare and medical training systems, and reaching initial agreements on cooperation in telemedicine, physician training, and academic exchanges.

Through a series of focused meetings and site visits, the delegation gained an in-depth understanding of the medical education and healthcare systems in the two African countries. Productive discussions were held with local institutions and professionals on potential collaboration, laying solid groundwork for Zhejiang University to further expand its engagement in education and health across Africa.
