Second-level Inspector Xi Ru from the Ministry of Education Visits International School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, encouraging the school to “serve the nation and the world” and become a benchmark for international medical education in China
A delegation from the Ministry of Education visited International School of Medicine, Zhejiang University on December 10. The delegation was led by Ms. Xi Ru, Second-level Inspector of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges, and Ms. Zheng Han, Director of the Division of International Students Affairs for an inspection and discussion. They were accompanied by Mr. Shu Peidong, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Education of Zhejiang Province; Mr. Du Jian, First-level Inspector; and Ms. Wang Yufen, Executive Dean of the International Education College of Zhejiang University. The delegation conducted on-site visits to facilities including the experimental teaching building, the library, and the gymnasium, received reports on the work of the International Medical College, and gained detailed insights into the ISM’s development, with particular focus on its practices and achievements in international medical education for students studying in China.

Ms. Xi Ru highly commended ISM’s educational outcomes. She emphasized that standardization and high-quality development constitute the lifeline of international student education in China. As an important platform for medical education under the Belt and Road Initiative, ISM “must align with national strategic needs, take root in Yiwu, connect with Zhejiang, serve the nation, and contribute to the world.” She encouraged ISM to take the lead, in collaboration with peer institutions, to actively promote the integration of international medical education programs into China’s domestic accreditation system for undergraduate medical programs. Concurrently, anchoring the goal of “first-class” education and leveraging its distinctive features and strengths, ISM should contribute to the export of international standards for China’s higher medical education. She further proposed that ISM closely align itself with the Belt and Road Initiative, deepen cooperation with domestic and international institutions, and establish itself as a bridgehead for international medical education in China.

Mr. Shu Peidong articulated three expectations for ISM’s development: first, to rigorously uphold the quality standards for international student cultivation, particularly by strengthening quality control in medical education and instruction; second, to optimize the structure of student sources and improve the quality of enrolled students; and third, to persist in open education, capitalize on Yiwu’s international advantages, and deepen university-local government collaboration as well as intra-university coordination.

Attendees at the discussion included Mr. Wu Liming, President of the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine and Deputy Party Secretary of both the Fourth Affiliated Hospital and ISM; Mr. Xu Jian, Executive Vice Dean of the International Institute of Health Sciences; Ms. Lou Xiaoxiao, Vice Dean of ISM; and heads of various departments within the school.
